It starts with six large egg yolks, 1/2 cup of white sugar, a pinch of salt, 2 cups whole milk, 2 cups heavy cream, 3 Tbs ground nutmeg and 2/3 cup of brandy or light rum, depending on your preference.

In a bowl, combine the egg yolks and sugar. Beat until the eggs are thick and light in color. Then, add the salt and mix it all together with a wooden spoon. In a separate large pot heat your milk and cream until it begins to steam. Then simultaneously stir your yolk and sugar mixture and add in the steaming milk and cream while continuously stirring.

Continue stirring until the mixture coats the back of a wooden spoon. Do not allow it to come to a simmer. Remove the pan from the heat and strain the eggnog into a bowl. Chill it in the refrigerator and stir in your ground nutmeg and brandy or light rum.

This eggnog is best served chilled with a sprinkle of ground nutmeg on top.
